Dog fostering is a temporary arrangement where you care for a rescue dog in your home until they are adopted. It’s a great way to help dogs without making a long-term commitment. Fostering is especially important for dogs that may need extra attention, training, or socialization before finding their permanent family.
Why Foster a Dog?
Fostering a dog is a rewarding way to provide rescue dogs with a safe, loving environment while they wait for their forever homes.
Save Lives: Every dog fostered opens space in shelters for another dog in need.
Trial for Adoption: Fostering can be a great way to see if you’re ready for dog ownership.
Rewarding Experience: Watching a dog thrive under your care is one of the most fulfilling experiences you can have.
Good to Know
Time Alone: Consider how long the dog will be left alone each day and plan accordingly.
Your Home: Make sure your home is safe, with a secure garden or yard if needed.
Training Needs: Be prepared to work on basic commands and leash walking if necessary.
Pets and Family: Consider how the foster dog will interact with other pets or children in your home.
Things to Consider
Time Commitment: Fostering can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on the dog’s needs.
Care Responsibilities: You’ll be responsible for providing food, exercise, and a safe space for the dog, as well as helping with basic training and socialization.
Expenses: Most fostering programs, including ours, cover veterinary costs and sometimes food, but additional expenses like toys or treats may be up to you.
Adjusting Period: Some rescue dogs may be shy, nervous, or need time to settle in. Patience and understanding are key.
